fun with my family

welcome.  slow down. enjoy.  A delicious cake consists of plain flour, raw eggs, bitter baking powder, messy oil and sweet sugar, but it adds up to a beautiful treat to be savored.

to-do tuesday

Ok, monday's are just too hard for me to get anything done.   not only am i simultaneously sad and happy that the kids are back at school for the week, I am usually not really ready to let go of the weekend I wander around for the first hour, not sure if i actually have free time or am just forgetting everything that i have to do.  I am usually swamped with such unfun chores as laundry tackling (it cannot be described as folding, that sounds too civilized.  Tackling the giant pile that teeters and threatens to fall behind the dryer, thus instantly disappearing from this world forever, is a more apt description).  food getting.  Grocery shopping sounds too organized.  I have not yet carved out time this year (and I mean since the beginning of the school year) to plan weekly, I am back to my old habit of just barely getting to the store and grabbing whatever I see that I know I can prepare that week.  (Chicken, rice, broccoli...sigh).  And general all around clean up.  Not fun!

But, today is TO-DO TUESDAY!  I am firmly back in reality by this day, and ready to tackle my week!  I organize my to do list in 4 different categories.  DO, MAKE, BUY, EMAIL.

It organizes my tasks so they don't feel overwhelming.

Bear in mind that I still procrastinate....this just allows me to feel organized while I'm doing it.:)

Here's what my to do booklet looks like.  I fold down the pages as I you remember doing that when you were a kid!?

Here are some other beautiful to do lists and books.  Even one you can make as a present.  Now that's what I call multi tasking!

This is similar to what I do...I put different long term projects onto individual clip boards and hang them on my office wall.  That way everything is together and is right in front of me!

But, this one is actually, the best one yet...

since laughing is my favorite;

happy friday!

cold weather photos

Don't get me wrong, i much prefer a warm, sunny day.  But when it's perpetually grey and depressing outside, I reach for my camera, and it forces me to see things differently.  Sometimes you can see the most beautiful things, with one eye shut!  "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."- Antoine de St. Exupery

happy new year!

ok can you tell i've been just a LITTLE distracted lately!?   Sorry to have left you hanging with such a lame post!!!! I am determined to start this new year off on the right foot!   The good news is that I've actually been busy making art and projects, and I am happy about that.  But by the time I actually make something, there is little time left over to blog.  So, that's my new year's resolution! to...somehow....find more time in my day. ....what?    well, for january and february at least.  the two most wonderfully "absent of any major holidays" months of the year.  valentines day doesn't count for me.  my husband and i usually avoid restaurants on that night and give each other socks {long story}.   for the kids class valentines, i've learned that the store bought ones are the best.  (see: easy).

But, I do love to celebrate 3 kings day, or 12th night, coming up this Sunday, January 6th.  It's the day we take our tree down and we reflect back on the past year.   Traditionally it's about the Epiphany, and the three wise men.  But since we like to make our own traditions around here, we tailor it to fit our family.  I like to give them small gifts of things they already need (like socks and underwear-what is it with me and socks?) and we eat angel food cake (not the traditional rosca del reyes).   (There is traditionally a little baby hidden inside and the one who finds it wins)  We just stick whatever polly pocket character we have lying around and the one who finds it in their cake gets an extra piece or hug, or just gets to gloat.

We go over our family journal from the past year and reminisce about all the good times we had.

I had one made at MINTED for this year with our own pictures on the cover.  I just love Minted, they are the greatest thing ever:)

Keeping a family journal is a nice way to slow down and cherish our memories, and also gear up for the year ahead.   So, here's to making fantastic new memories in 2013!  Happy new year!

 From my bulletin board:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” - Marianne Williamson
