fun with my family

welcome.  slow down. enjoy.  A delicious cake consists of plain flour, raw eggs, bitter baking powder, messy oil and sweet sugar, but it adds up to a beautiful treat to be savored.

after a trip to the library, where we checked out some books on tape; my 3 year old thought she would go home and sell her "old" tapes.  I think I must have said "that's nice honey", because sure enough, when we got home, and I started cooking or something, she kept coming into the room saying "I have the tapes."  then "I have the cash register"....I finally realized she was serious.  How could I say no?! We packed up the stuff and went to the corner and "opened our shop".  She yelled out on the Barbie cash register microphone, "tapes for sale!" to all who drove by, for about 20 minutes!  We finally threw in the towel, but she had a great time and who was I to discourage her dream of selling her old tapes! ( I was really hoping no one would buy them, they are from the 70's and soo cute!)

carpet stains

"Get a new puppy!" they said.  "It will be fun!" they said.   Because of all this fun, I now know everything about how to clean a carpet.

Before I let you in on my secrets to carpet cleaning~let's have some fun teaching them how to go outdoors in the first place! Get a cool bell and hang it from one specific door.

Everytime you notice them sniffing the floor ~immediately pick them up and take them to the door with the bell.  Say your key word (ours is: OUTSIDE) and take their paw, ring the bell & put them outside.

Do this a million times (see how fun this is!) but it will work.

Here's our puppy trying it out:

While you're working on that, ~ and the one time you take your eye off her & she explodes all over your carpet (remember this is fun) ~ you'll need to know how to clean up the mess.  here is my secret carpet cleaning solution. Hydrogen Peroxide.

Let me explain:

I'm guilty of buying whatever carpet cleaning solution smells the best, spraying it on everything and hoping for the best.    Hard wood floors, linoleum, synthetic carpet, even.....WOOL!   Until I learned that most surfaces can handle those cleaners......EXCEPT wool!   It turns the stain an even brighter shade of yellow.   (More of the fun we've been talking about!)

I found this out the hard way.  Notice mess.  Blot it up.  Scold dog.  Spray something-anything to get the urine smell out. Blot more. Silently curse my decision to buy a white wool carpet which is now a patchwork of bright yellow stains.  Repeat.this phot was taken during the cleaning process. You can still make out the yellow outline of the "bleach" stain from the commercial carpet cleaning solution.

One cannot live like this.  After my husband moved a chair over it, nevermind that it was in the middle of the walkway, I decided to do a little research.  Most people recommend vinegar+baking soda concoction.  Which did nothing if not made it slightly worse.  Someone at the bottom of some thread of comments on some carpet cleaning forum mentioned hydrogen peroxide.  We have cleaned our couch with hydrogen peroxide for years.  Why not wool?  I tried it on a tiny patch and it literally worked in seconds.   Yellow stain GONE.  (I even used it on our SILK carpet which is tan, and it did not stain it white, it just cleans it so you never knew it was there.  No stain, no smell.  Just Magic.)

Seriously people. No scrub brushes, vinegar, baking soda, soda water, ammonia, expensive cleaners.  Only the simple brown bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide.  Did you know you can also gargle with it to get rid of a sore throat?

Don't let the scary brown bottle fool you.  It's magic!

xoxo

SPECIFIC STEPS I USED:

FOR NEW SPOTS:  1.WITH CLEAN DRY RAGS, BLOT URINE STAIN UNTIL NO MORE URINE COMES OFF ONTO TOWEL.  2. LIGHTLY SOAK AN ABSORBANT RAG IN UNDILUTED HYDROGEN PEROXIDE.  3.BLOT STAIN ENOUGH TO FEEL DAMP BUT NOT SOAKING. 4. DO NOT RUB. 5. LET STAND ONE HOUR.  6.BLOT DRY WITH A CLEAN ABSORBANT RAG.

FOR OLDER STAINS OR YELLOWED WOOL CARPET STAINS: FOLLOW STEPS 2-6 BUT YOU CAN COAT RAG LIBERALLY WITH THE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE.   KEEP REPEATING UNTIL STAIN IS GONE!

Alt 2014

Wow! The Altitude Summit in Salt Lake City has been on my bucket list for years now.  I finally got to go, and it was everything I imagined and more.

I did not plan outfits like most of the attendees, nor did I attend any of the after parties.  I was a bit of a party pooper.  But I had a lot of work do, and I am usually exhausted at the end of a day like that anyway.  And.....truth be told....half of the attraction of going out of town was that I would be out of town....by myself......alone.   Something unheard of around my house.   So, I gladly got to my quiet hotel room and worked a bit, ordered room service and watched movies......um yes, it was heaven.

And, Christy Turlington was there(!), and we happened to go to High School together, but haven't seen each other since!  And she was so kind, gracious, and beautiful.   Plus, she was there to talk about her organization EVERY MOTHER COUNTS.  And when someone is doing work like that in the world, they glow.  She does.  She glows.  She stayed after and chatted with the some 50+ people who waited in line to see her, and made each person feel special.  Seeing Christy was the icing on the cake.

Thank you Alt, for being everything I dreamed.  I shall return!

soup!

i am not one to usually make lunch...i snack on some nuts and sometimes forget the kids need to eat something normal.  i saw this on the back of a Bush's White Northern Beans can and actually had the ingredients!

put some good olive oil in a dutch oven.  the recipe calls for bacon, but of course i didn't have any, so i chopped up some ham slices.  i used 5 slices cut into squares.

brown them in a dutch oven with a few glugs of good olive oil over med-low heat.

add two minced garlic cloves

cook gently for two minutes so they don't burn

add two chopped carrots, in a heart shape of course! i could only get a few to come out looking like hearts, and they didn't even notice...but still pretty cute.

add two or three celery stalks

brown them gently in dutch oven...oops forgot to tell you to chop an onion and add that too.  cook it all up over med-low heat until the veggies are nice and soft.

add carton of chicken broth

oh and i almost forgot!!! a can of rinsed white beans.  warm it all up together; add a tsp of cumin, and salt and pepper to taste and voila!! a yummy lunch for all!
